The Familiar and Unfamiliar in Twentieth-Century Architecture by Jean La Marche, X This ambitious study uses the concept of the familiar Twentieth Century and the avant-garde practice of defamiliarization to reexamine some of the most important buildings of the twentieth century. In approaching the history of twentieth-century Western architecture from the perspective of the architectural subject--the person architects imagine experiencing their work--Jean La Marche reveals new insights into the ways humans are imagined in relation to architecture. The Familiar Twentieth Century and the Unfamiliar in Twentieth-Century Architecture examines the work--written Twentieth Century and built--of four seminal twentieth-century architects Twentieth Century and firms: Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Aldo Rossi, Twentieth Century and the partnership of Robert Venturi Twentieth Century and Denise Scott Brown. In separate chapters devoted to analyzing the early writings Twentieth Century and architecture of each architect or firm, La Marche uncovers assumptions that each makes about the ways they expect their works to be experienced. Matching the texts the architects wrote with the buildings they were designing contemporaneously, he focuses on the language employed in discussing the subject to reveal the author-architects' distinct voices Twentieth Century and points of view. La Marche engages these four analyses to expound on some of the more pressing issues of late twentieth-century architectural theory. In addressing how the meaning of the familiar Twentieth Century and the unfamiliar are altered when we imagine the influence architecture can have on its subjects, La Marche provides a fresh framework for delineating the politics Twentieth Century and ethics of the discipline.

Political Philosophers of the Twentieth Century by Michael Lessnoff, This acute Twentieth Century and critical survey of the major figures Twentieth Century and ideas of twentieth-century political philosophy provides a vivid portrait of the history of our time. It demonstrates the absurdity of the view that political philosophy was "dead" in this century. In actuality, the twentieth century has produced a galaxy of political philosophers that can stand comparison with that of any earlier epoch. If new political problems Twentieth Century and crises give rise to originality in political theory, this century has had ample inspiration for the abundance. Political Philosophers of the Twentieth Century explores writers both liberal Twentieth Century and neo-Marxist, as well as less easily classifiable thinkers such as Arendt Twentieth Century and Habermas. It shows how these political theories have been shaped by responses to deep-rooted social Twentieth Century and ideological forces of our century, such as bureaucratization, rationalization Twentieth Century and "disenchantment". This is a book that will be welcomed by all that are interested in political philosophy.
